La Reggia di Caserta

Realizzata a partire dal 1752 da Luigi Vanvitelli, continuò i lavori suo figlio Carlo, per volere di Carlo di Borbone con lo scopo di erigerla quale fulcro del nuovo regno di Napoli. Il re conquistato dalla bellezza del paesaggio casertano e, per ragioni di sicurezza, la volle lontana dal mare e nell’entroterra, ma poco distante da Napoli. La Reggia avrebbe dovuto reggere il confronto con quella di Versailles. Fu ultimata nel 1845 (anche se era già abitata dal 1780) ed è considerata l’ultimo grande esempio di Barocco italiano. Nel 1997 la Reggia di Caserta è stata dichiarata patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO ed ha una superficie di 47.ooo m2, cinque piani e quattro cortili interni. Presenta al suo interno un imponente scalone d’onore, la Cappella Palatina, l’appartamento storico, il teatro di corte e la Quadreria. La reggia di Caserta è la residenza reale più grande al mondo. Il Parco e la cascata, inoltre, conferiscono al complesso uno stile altamente elegante e scenografico.

L’Anfiteatro Campano

L’Anfiteatro campano, edificato in età Flavia tra il I e il II sec. d.C. è il monumento, che per importanza e dimensioni è secondo solo al Colosseo. Nel parco verde dove è inserito, sono presenti altre testimonianze della città romana: l’Anfiteatro repubblicano, probabilmente il primo anfiteatro romano in muratura; l’edificio ottagonale di età imperiale, e il portico curvilineo antistante l’Anfiteatro imperiale, tracce evidenti di un passato illustre.
Dichiarato Monumento Nazionale nel 1822, fu aperto al pubblico dal 1913.

Museo del Gladiatori

A Capua, accanto all’Anfiteatro campano, è presente un museo dedicato agli eroi dell’arena. Nella prima sala si presentano i giochi gladiatorii, con pannelli, copie delle armature rinvenute a Pompei, un plastico, che mostra l’Anfiteatro sia nella sua forma originaria che come rudere, e un video, che narra la storia e l’architettura del monumento. Sono inoltre esposte testimonianze della storia del sito, da necropoli a quartiere degli spettacoli. Busti superstiti delle divinità del portico, in alto sulla parete, invitano ad accedere nella seconda sala dove è ricostruito un settore della cavea, con le sue splendide decorazioni marmoree.
